Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite Demo Impression

GameStop describes it:

The epic clash between two storied universes returns with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, the next era of the highly revered action-fighting game series. Marvel and Capcom universes collide like never before as iconic characters team up for action-packed player-versus-player combat. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is currently in development and will simultaneously release on the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, and Windows PC worldwide on September 19, 2017.

Imagined and created through a shared vision between the two companies, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will feature a variety of exciting and accessible single player modes and rich multi-player content for new players and longtime fans alike. In addition to single player Arcade, Training and Mission modes, a visually stunning and immersive cinematic Story Mode will put players at the center of both universes as they battle for survival against a sinister new threat, Ultron Sigma. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is being built to highlight a combination of iconic locations and fan favorite characters from both universes, including Captain Marvel and Iron Man from the Marvel side, and Ryu and Mega Man X from Capcom.

(no spoilers on story)

(I wasn’t able to record gameplay because the demo would not allow it.)

After a long time since we had Marvel vs Capcom 3 (or if you have Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3), Capcom and Marvel finally came back together and bring forth the next installment to the MvC universe titled as Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. Based on the trailers shown, new characters join this game from both worlds such as Captain Marvel and Mega Man X along with returning with old characters like Thor and Chun-Li. Also introduced into the game is the Infinity Stones (special stones in which plays a key role in the MCU films and source power to Marvel villain’s Thanos Infinity Glove) which allows players to use specials as advantage in combat like teleporting or repelling. Since the game won’t be out until September, I played this demo for PS4 and I will give you my feedback on the game so far.

Story – When Worlds Collide

The story begins with Asgard taken over by the metal overlord enemy Ultron Sigma (a fused villain from Ultron in Marvel comics and Sigma from the Mega Man X series). An alliance formed by the characters from Marvel and Capcom goes to Asgard for a “rescue mission” and fend off against Ultron Sigma’s minions, Ultron robots and X Warriors (possessed warriors of Asgard). Here is the following characters you meet and some you play:

  • Captain America
  • Captain Marvel
  • Thor
  • Rocket Raccoon
  • X (Mega Man X)
  • Iron Man (not playable)
  • Dr. Strange (not playable)
  • Hawkeye (not playable)
  • Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
  • Arthur (Ghosts’n Goblins)
  • Dante (Devil May Cry)
  • Chris Redfield (Resident Evil)
  • Spencer (Bionic Commando)
  • Strider (not playable) (Strider)
  • Ulton Sigma (not playable)

I played the previous Marvel vs Capcom game in the PS3 and I was happy for this game and I always enjoyed fighting games. I like the combat mechanics in the game and made things feel smooth. The animation in the game is pretty fast and smooth and improved since the previous game. I was impressed on how Unreal Engine made the characters look really similar to Street Fighter V. I do kind of miss having the pixel/sprite versions like the classic games and having the same animation from U/MvC3. Fighting is pretty easy to learn for beginners and if you already experienced fighting in the other games, it’s simple like a walk in a park. I really the story so far and I like these characters are involved in these fights as opposed to having just arcade and fighting to the final boss.

The only thing I have to complain is the AI controls. Whenever I fight the computer, they tend to just block and defend and do less fighting. I guess it’s not to complain since it is beginning of the game and it’s also a demo too. The only character that actually proves to be a challenge is Ultron Sigma and defeating him is impossible. The game also didn’t seem to explain the Infinity Stones as well either. I was trying to understand the purpose of the Power Stone (a purple stone that I assume repels opponents) and later I learned the Time Stone (the ability to teleport across the stage) on my own.

Conclusion – Age of Ultron Sigma

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite invites old and new fans to two new worlds of popular franchises and pits them together in an epic brawl. The fight combat is pretty fun and animation is something to get used to if you are used to the past animation. The story so far reminds me of Avengers: Age of Ultron with Capcom characters and the AI needs some work. However, I am excited to see more characters and see more updates to this game. 1. I definitely can’t wait for this game. It should definitely be really hype and having a story mode at last will be awesome. I definitely agree that the character models remind me of SF V. From now on I’m just going to think of this style whenever Capcom releases a fighting game story.
