Terrible news: Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido Arc in hiatus because of creator’s crime!

Don’t you hate it when you wake and you get bad news? I do and here is what is going on.

Recently announced today from Shueisha, Jump SQ will not be releasing any Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc chapters for a while. As a matter of fact, this series is going to be on indefinite hiatus! If the series is on hiatus in Japan, that means fans in America will also miss out on Kenshin.

Why you may ask?

The reason why the series is on indefinite hiatus is because it is reported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police that the manga creator Nobuhiro Watsuki is charged for possession of child pornography. According to authorities, Watsuki had more child porn in his office and hidden away recently in October. The porn he had was in DVDs and it was about young girls in early teens. Watsuki comments about it by saying, “liked girls in late elementary school to around the second year of middle school.”

Police also found more in his home which dates back to 2015. For Watsuki’s crime, he is entailed for a year of imprisonment and has to pay a fine of 1 million yen (in USA currency it is $8,800).

Now with this said, Watsuki later expresses his deep sorrow and regrets ever doing the crime. With this crime now, it’s going to be a long time until Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc to come back.

  1. That’s definitely terrible. Honestly I’m not sure if the manga will ever come back from this. Ah well, Kenshin was good while it lasted. I wouldn’t mind if a new team took it over or something

  2. I was shocked. Just… stunned. I had plans to work on a couple of reviews today, but instead I spent the day just writing my thoughts on this.

Out of curiosity, do you think it should come back? Do you think sales of all of Watsuki’s works should be ended?

The actress who played Kaoru in the live action and her company may have to pay a billion yen for not being able to play Kaoru again along with her other projects… just because she got married and became pregnant. Yet the fine for Watsuki’s possession is a measly 1 million yen. Priorities, Japan, geez louise.

    • That’s a good question. I am not sure if Kenshin will come back or not. It’s already old news but I heard the author of Toriko once dealt with crime regarding with a relationship with someone being underage but after that, he did his manga and concluded the story.

      • The author can sign away rights to another author. The little girl theme never came up in the manga/anime/live as far as I have seen. You would think there would be some clues in the series if he had an obsession.

      • That could happen if he gives permission and can trust someone else for his work. I know some manga authors will give permission to others if they want to use their works for projects like Boruto and Dragon Ball Super manga. I never seen any clues. I think he kept this secret well hidden. He probably didn’t want to talk about because it’s taboo.

  3. As a Rurouni Kenshin fan, I am so distraught. I am in the abyss of despondency. I feel betrayed and let down that he would wallow in that garbage. I can only hope that he goes on a quest for atonement, like his character Kenshin. Just as Kenshin atoned for his sins, I am hoping that Watsuki will likewise atone for his and do everything in his power to change himself and to make amends.
