Game News: Sonic Director joins Square Enix!

Found on Twitter but I found out in Anime News Network, Sonic the Hedgehog game programmer and former leader of Sonic Team Yuji Naka revealed the news that he decided to join the game company Square Enix. He even mentions that he will still be working in video games.

So what does this mean? I believe Sonic will still be in Sega unless something happens but that means the same guy who worked on Sonic games will be lending a hand in Square Enix team and be involved projects such as Final Fantasy or other well known titles.

Here are some interesting facts:

  • Yuji Nake joined Sega in 1984 but starting developing Sonic the Hedgehog in 1990.
  • He left Sega and formed his own team named Prope in 2006. (This is probably the same time where Sega split up into teams and made games like Sonic 06 and Wii game Sonic and the Secret Rings.)
  • He was the producer to the OVA anime Sonic the Hedgehog in 1996 and executive producer to 2003 Sonic X anime.
  • In Prope, he made games like Rodea the Sky Soldier, Fishing Resort and Ivy the Kiwi?

  1. Yeah, Sonic should remain with SEGA. The new comcis are coming in April, and there’s the rumoured live action film this year too, so I don’t see why the’d shift ownership or anything like that. Still, good for Yuji Naka. Here’s hoping it doesn’t harm Sonic games going forward πŸ™‚

    • Yeah I hope those news. The live action movie is supposed to have the director of Deadpool and the new IDW comics of Sonic is probably coming in Spring. I need to get back into the comics. It wouldn’t make sense to have Sonic move to Square Enix. Still, let’s hope and see what does Yuji Naka have in store for us.

      • Aye, April the comics launch – I’ve got my pre-order in in my local import comic store. I’d read that about the Deadpool director. I just hope they don’t muck it up. In a way, I’d feel less wary about the film if it were all CGI like the modern game cut scenes. Sonic would be an odd for Square Enix, largely because I associate them entirely with RPGS, and Sonic has only had one RPG game before now.

      • Awesome. I wonder if it’s going to continue off from the Archie comics. Yeah I think it would be weird if that happened. I can’t help but think of movies like the Smurfs. I heard the Sonic RPG was decent but you’re right. Sonic is a platformer and his rival is Mario.

      • I would be surprised if it continues on from Archie. As much as I enjoyed them, I suspect IDW will want a fresh start.
Yup, I quite liked the RPG. Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood it was called. The sequel to it was cancelled in part due to one of the of Archie Sonic writers too I believe.

      • I think I hear the comics does a great job on storytelling. IDW might do a great job on retelling the Sonic universe and make use of all the characters like the comics.
I think I heard about that too. It left a cliffhanger. It’s a shame it’s not coming back.
