Kenshin Update: Author must pay fine

Remember the recent news about the author of Rurouni Kenshin and his crime on child pornography? I got an update today about his crime and punishment.

Recently reported today, the Tokyo Public Prosecutors Office filed an indictment on the creator of the manga Nobuhiro Watsuki (his real name is Nobuhiro Nishiwaki). The Tokyo Summary Court has ordered Watsuki to pay a fine for his crime for the price of 200,000 yen (in American dollars, that’s $1,900). Watsuki must now pay for the things he did.

If you don’t know what I am talking about, Reported in the fall of 2017 (In October), the police in Japan reported and arrested Watsuki for possessing DVDs of child pornography in his office. Police also found he had pornography in his home as well that goes way back in July 2015. Even Watsuki admitted that the underage girls (ages in late elementary and second year middle school) look attracted.

In result for his crime, the recent and new Rurouni Kenshin manga, The Hokkaido Arc, will be indefinite hiatus and it’s unknown if it will come back.

      • I’m heartbroken over it, too. In fact, I am despondent over it. However, just like Rurouni Kenshin is about redemption, in which Kenshin works to atone for his sins by protecting the innocent, can there be redemption for Watsuki? Could he atone for his sins? Could he find some way to help victims of human trafficking and child abuse images? Could he atone for his sins like Kenshin? A part of me likes to think so, and hope that he does. Kenshin teaches that people can be redeemed. I am hoping for the best.

      • Same here. I hope this will make him reflect and remember what he has done. He’s a great creator. It’s really fustrating to see a guy get himself into trouble like this.

      • By the way, Matthew, I am not justifying what he did. But I am trying to put things in perspective. He comes from a culture in which people having child abuse images were taken lightly for years and years, like it wasn’t that big of a deal. Again, it’s horrible. Again, it doesn’t justify what he did. But I could see how growing up in a culture like that could be a bit damaging. Hey, don’t get me wrong, I love Japan. It’s one of my favorite countries. I adore it. But child abuse images are a problem they have had for years. It’s been more recently, within the last couple of years, that they have started cracking down on it. Again, I am hoping Watsuki has a change of heart and rectifies the damage he has done. I hope he becomes a protector of children against those who would abuse them.

      • Yeah I agree. It sickens me to see him fall into that stuff. It’s horrible. I like Japan like you, but child abuse is something that makes feel sick and angry.
