(This is the video game review for the movie adaptation. You can read the movie review here on the hyperlink.)
Like I mentioned in the movie review, the creators of Ratchet and Clank not only wanted to do a movie about Ratchet and Clank, but they also rebooted the classic PS2 game and retold with an updated casts with the original assets. In other words in this game, take everything you knew about the PS2 game and redo the story with enhance gameplay for the PS4 console and with colorful characters. This game was free for PS+ members on PS4 and I was happy to get this game. I haven’t played a Ratchet and Clank game since the PS2 era and one game from the PSP called Size Matters. Insomniac Games has kept this game for a long time and unlike Naughty Dog, they own Ratchet and Clank. Ratchet and Clank’s rival game series Jak and Daxter was born around the time the PS2 made its debut and these games were insanely popular for PS fans. Unfortunately, Naughty Dog sold the rights for Jak and Daxter and then focused on other titles like Uncharted and the Last of Us. Without getting sidetracked, let’s start the review:
Story – As Told by Quark
Unlike the movie, the story is told by the former leader of the Galactic Ranger named Quark and giving his perspective on the story Ratchet and Clank. The story begins at Aleero City Penitentiary, a jail for criminals, where an inmate named Shiv Helax moves in with the recent inmate Quark. Quark tells the story about how he was once a hero and now a criminal all because of Ratchet and Clank. As he tells the story, we see Ratchet on his home planet on Veldin where he works as a mechanic with Grim. When he hears that the Galactic Rangers are hosting an event to enlist more rangers, Ratchet sets out to prove himself worthy as a member, unfortunately he gets declined for past mistakes in his life. Meanwhile at a robot factory on Planet Quartu, as the game’s antagonist Chairmen Drek and robot war bot lieutenant Victor Von Ion (who got a new designed for this game and changed since from the PS2) views his robot army increase all thanks to Dr. Nefarious, they see a defected robot named Clank who escapes the factory and tries to warn the Galactic Rangers. As Clank makes a getaway in a ship, Victor shoots his ship and sends him crashlanding at Veldin. Feeling distraught with not being able to join the team, Ratchet views the night sky and then sees Clank’s ship crash. Ratchet saves Clank and Clank informs him that he needs to contact the Galactic Rangers because Chairman Drek is going to kill them and destroy planets. Seeing this as an opportunity, Ratchet joins Clank and sets off for a galactic adventure.
Gameplay – New console plus same gameplay equals insane explosions
If you already know about Ratchet and Clank, you get the idea on the gameplay. Ratchet and Clank is an action-adventure shooting game where players utilizes many weapons and gadgets to defeat your enemies. In order to get these weapons, players must gather bolts, game’s currency, and purchase them in vendors. As they players uses the weapons, their weapons levels up and every time it happens, more damage is increased and reaching the maximum level gives the weapons additional perks. You can upgrade them by collecting raritanium in which allows guns to have additional damage or increased ammo or obtain easy holocards. New to this game is holocards and the purpose of them is to allow players collect and trade them to increase helpful bonuses like obtaining faster raritanium or bolts. However, there are also these special holocards called RYNO holocards where if players can collect all these cards, they will be rewarded to the game’s ultimate weapon, the RYNO (Rip Ya A New One).
However, unlike the classic game, you can strafe, meaning you can shoot and run side to side. The Nanotech gets an upgrade to where if you fight for a long time, you can increase your nanotech health bar where it will be difficult to lose. Like I mentioned, if you already know about Ratchet and Clank and know how to play it, you can easily play this game without trouble. Just like the movie, we do get to meet the new characters, but I won’t go into details since I mentioned briefly in my movie review. However, the classic characters like Skid McMarx and Al are back and just like the game, they are here to help the players. If Skid is back then that means hoverboard racing returns and it is still fun. Overall, playing this game on the PS4 gives me so much nostalgia even though it is supposed to be based on the movie.
Review: A reboot of the classic vs A game based on the movie
In my review on the movie, I mentioned that the movie focused on the main story while it also had less gun action. In this game, the game assumes you watched the movie and it gives you tons of actions. Some boss fights are substituted and rather having characters bicker at each other, the players are involved and engaged in mortal combat. Even though the game is supposed to promote the movie, it also tackles on trying to be like a reboot as well. This new version game changed many of the characters interaction and combat. In the classic PS2, we see Ratchet and Clank slowly become friends from the beginning to the end even after going through a dispute. This game, however, makes them instant friends. As for Captain Quark, we can already tell he was going to be a boss character in the game as opposed to the PS2. In the PS2, he shows up as a egotistical hero who pretends to be your friend and then tries to kill by sending in experiments and then later a dogfight in space. In the PS4, you can sense his jealously when Ratchet and Clank get popular and tries to kill them with each other weapons. However, the PS4 Quark does a bit different and make sympathetic when he realizes the errors of the ways. Plus, he comments as he tells the story in his perspective is pretty funny. Besides the game trying to be both a reboot and a movie tie-in, this game is still amazing. With the PS4 graphics, this game is beautiful when you explore the planets and get into fights with explosions in HD. Clank’s minigames where solves puzzles with his robot buddies and giving him combat is fun, but I wish they kept his giant form.
Overall – Worth playing?
Is Ratchet and Clank PS4 worth playing? In my opinion, yes! Even though as a fan of the series, I would say you should get this for your PS4, I would also recommend it new players as well. I really love blasting my enemies in HD and exploring the world. Collecting bolts and raritanium to power up my gun gives me an exciting feeling because it gives me the feeling that I am powerful. The controls for the game is really easy to learn and once you start playing the game, you can’t help but feel like fighting more enemies. As an added bonus, if players beat the game, you can replay the game again with all your weapons still available along with your items (blots, holocards, gold bolts, etc.) and you can upgrade your maxed weapons into Omega Weapons. The enemies even get tougher and this gives you an opportunity to level up your health and weapons. However, even though this game is supposedly a reboot, it is also a movie adaptation. Sometimes you might get nostaglia and then you will get hit by some new encounters you never met inthe original PS2 game such as meeting Dr. Nefarious or meeting the members of the Galactic Rangers. I don’t know the percentage, but I would say that 85% of this game is a reboot while the 15% is new material, or movie details. Nonetheless, this game is great for new and old fans and I highly recommend it if you are in the market for a good and fair price of Ratchet and Clank. I really hope we get a HD sequel and get titles like Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal or Ratchet: Deadlocked.
