E3 2016

The year was 2016. Another E3 is happening and game companies are dishing out their trailers for upcoming games. It’s Sony’s turn to share something to their fans and the company that sparked every Marvel fan’s minds was a company called Insomniac Games and the game they shared was Marvel Spider-Man. Unlike the past Spider-Man games, Marvel’s Spider-Man was made by Insomniac Games, the same company who is well-known for doing all the Ratchet and Clank games and Sunset Overdrive, rather than being made by Activision. Activision is a well-known company that was mostly did Spider-Man games such as the ones from movies (Sam Raimi and Marc Webb), Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time. However, this new game was made exclusively for PS4 so if want to experience this game, you will need a PS4. Not to mention, based on the trailers of this game, it is not based off the movies and this includes movies like Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War. Just in case, if you were expecting this game to be based on the movies, you will be mistaken because this game will have an entire new and original story. For the rest of the review, I won’t be talking about the story so I can avoid spoiling others on the story.

Story – Be Greater

The story begins Peter Parker trying to live a normal life by balancing his average life and superhero life The game’s story quickly puts the player into action when Peter suits up as Spider-Man when he hears the police need help on arresting the crime lord Wilson Fisk, a.k.a Kingpin. After a tough battle at Fisk’s building, the police finally arrested the Kingpin and Spider-Man returns to his daily life as scientist assistant. However, even after Wilson Fisk got arrested, New York faces another threat. Spider-Man encounters some unusual men with black and white energy and they have a mysterious agenda against Mayor Norman Osborn. These men are willing to attack New York and hurt people in order to inflict pain on the Mayor. It’s up to Spider-Man to find out who is the ringleader of these men called the demons and what is their plans on New York. Along the way, he will get help from Mary Jane and new friend and partner Miles Morales.

Characters – Recognizable characters for the fans

Even if you are a Marvel fan or not, everyone knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. In this game’s story, Peter Parker is not in high school or college, but instead he’s an adult who is just trying to save money and be able to pay for rent. The voice chosen for Spider-Man/Peter Parker is Yuri Lowenthal, the same voice actor who does the voice for Sasuke Uchiha in Naruto and Ben Tennyson from Ben 10. This could be good or bad news to some, but I like his voice, it fits him. Some people wanted Josh Keaton to voice Spider-Man, the voice actor who is well-known for voicing Spider-Man in the cartoon series The Spectacular Spider-Man; instead he does show up in this game but as the villain Electro. Mary Jane Watson is voiced by Laura Baily who well-known for voicing Kushina Uzamki in Naruto Shippuden and even Disney XD 2017 cartoon Spider-Man (this cartoon has Robbie Daymond as Spider-Man) as Gwen Stacy and Black Widow. Miles Morales is voiced by Nadji Jeter who has been in the Grown Up movies and even in The Last of Us as Sam. Even J. Jonah Jameson appears in this game as a podcast speaker and rants about Spider-Man and the criminals and his voice is done by Darin de Paul who is well-known for doing the voice of Final Fantasy XV villain Ardyn. And yes, Marvel creator Stan Lee makes an appearance in the game as a cameo.

Gameplay – Spider-Man “Arkham Marvel Knight”? Spider-Man 2 Revamped?

The gameplay of Spider-Man is one of the biggest factor in a Marvel video game. The world of Marvel Spider-Man is a huge sandbox game where players can freely choose to play the main game story or just tackle on side missions and random crime acts. As Spider-Man, players will be able to travel through New York in style by either swinging on anything that can be used to swing such as trees and buildings or you can web zip for fast distance or wall runs. The combat really does feel like the Batman Arkham games where players can be creative on fighting enemies. You can use a combination of your melee attacks and use web gadgets to easily take down your foes. The AI enemies can either be really simple or an actual challenge, this includes boss battles as well. Some of Spider-Man villains are sometimes no push over and they can make a fight tough, but really fun. Whenever the game doesn’t require to be heroic, you can play as just regular Peter Parker and do some science challenges like matching chemicals or hacking. You also get the chance to play as Mary Jane Watson as she is a key character when doing stealth missions. Miles Morales is also a playable character, but as the same way as Mary Jane. However, what makes Miles different is that he can plays almost like Watch Dogs where he has a cell phone where he can instantly hack into any electrical appliance and use it as a distraction. Another fun thing to do is photo mode where you can take pictures in the game and share them in social media. You can take pictures of Spider-Man swinging, fighting and taking a selfie. Adding stickers like chibi versions of the characters or even using comic book sound effects is also pretty nifty. If stickers is not your thing, you can always play with frames where you can make your picture look like a comic book or a billboard. Another thing I like is Just the Facts with J. Jonah Jameson where J.J.J. hosts a podcasts and complains about Spider-Man and the bad guys while you play the game. You have the option to turn off his podcast if he is annoying because he does pop up randomly in the game and giving New York his “facts”.

Review: The Perfect Spider-Man video game?

In my opinion, Marvel Spider-Man is a video game worth the wait. This is by far one of the best Playstation exclusive video game. I never played Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 or GC, but I remember hearing fans say that playing this PS4 game gives fans great nostalgia because of the gameplay and combat. I really like how the game has an original story and we don’t need to worry about relying on the movies. The combat system is a real pleasure and it certainly does give me memories of playing Batman Arkham games. Just like Batman, I got hooked on the game’s story and the characters were amazing. I like Spider-Man quirky personality whenever he either teases his friends and foes, and whenever he got mad or serious, I could sense that anger in his tone. I had a fun time with taking pictures of Spider-Man and being a goofball; it reminded me of Final Fantasy XV photos. Playing the game and completing every challenge was so satisfying and if you are a trophy hunter, this game will keep you busy on getting those trophies. Another thing I like was the ability to unlock suits which also unlocks abilities. You can unlock Spider-Man’s suits in the game and use it for the story, and the award for unlocking them gives you abilities in which you can equip anytime. For example, wearing the Spider-Armor from Marvel movie Avenger’s: Infinity War gives Spider-Man the ability to summon robot spider legs and allows him to take down foes. The Spider-Man Noir suit allows players to remain silent and be able to take down enemies without making any noise. Another thing I want to point out that the costumes are all free and in the game so you don’t have to pay to unlock. If you pre-ordered the game like I did, you probably got Spider-Punk, Spider-Armor and the Full Velocity Armor for free thanks to a redeemable code. To those who didn’t pre-order, you can still get these costumes free by doing missions like taking down crime, taking pictures or doing one of Taskmaster’s missions. The only thing you have the option to pay is when players decide to buy the season pass The City That Never Sleeps. I will probably talk about the DLC in the future, but I want to say that the only paid-DLC. Overall, even if don’t want the DLC, you can still have a good time with this game. As far I know, the only thing I could complain is that the game can sometimes have minor glitches. Whenever I fought enemies, sometimes the bad guys can get stuck within a wall or fence, but it’s only minor and doesn’t happen often. Remember when I said, you get to play as Mary Jane and Miles? This could also be a negative factor as well if you have no patience to be walking around. If you’re playing through the story, you have to play these characters to go. I didn’t mind it at first, but after the recent update where you can play the game in New Game+, I thought it was a chore to go back and redo everything. Going back to New Game+, there is New Game+ which allows players who already beat the game and do the story again with all the suits and abilities unlocked.

Conclusion – Worth the money?

Is Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4) worth the money? Yes. This game is worth it for PS4 owners. It’s a shame Xbox or PC users will miss out, but if this game gets enough demand, we could get a Xbox One or PC version of Spider-Man. If we were able to get NieR: Automata for Xbox One even though it was for PS4 and PC only games, I think we could get Spider-Man. Marvel Spider-Man gives players the freedom to play as Spider-Man and interact with the story which feels closely like a comic book more than a movie. The characters are likable and this includes villains. The replay value is 10/10 great and the new features like New Game+ and Ultimate Mode (Very Hard Mode) will encourage you to replay the game again and test your abilities. If you don’t mind minor technical bugs or slow paced moments in the story, it’s a game I highly recommend. You don’t even have to be a Marvel fan to play this game and if you only like Spider-Man, you will fit right in. The game does include easter eggs of Marvel characters like the Avengers Tower for the Avengers, Dr. Strange’s Sanctum and even something from Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

Anyway, what’s your opinion on this game. No spoilers please!
