Greetings gamers! I got some interesting news to share with you in regards to the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake video game. It’s not about the story or gameplay, but does involve with the characters and their voices. According to a tweet I found and I found an article from DualShockers, it’s been revealed that English Dub for the Final Fantasy VII characters will get an updated cast. This means that long time voice actor Steve Burton who voices Cloud Strife will be replaced with another actor.

Some of these people have worked in TV shows, video games and movies.

  • Cloud, voiced by Cody Christian (All American, Teen Wolf)
  • Barret, voiced by John Eric Bentley (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Independence Day: Resurgence)
  • Aerith, voiced by Briana White (Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Occupants)
  • Tifa, voiced by Britt Baron (GLOW)
  • Jessie, voiced by Erica Lindbeck (Spider-Man, Persona 5, ThunderCats Roar)
  • Biggs, voiced by Gideon Emery (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Teen Wolf)
  • Wedge, voiced by Matt Jones (Breaking Bad)
  • Sephiroth, voiced by Tyler Hoechlin

Cody Christian will be replacing Steve Burton as Cloud Strife; the most recent work Steve Burton did as Cloud was in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT in 2018. Tyler Hoechlin will be the third English voice actor for Sephiroth; the first actor was was Lang Bass in Kingdom Hearts (KH1) and then voiced by George Newbern in later titles like Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Dissidia titles and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Tifa’s previous voice actor was Rachael Leigh Cook. Aerith has a total of four voice actress; the first voice she was given was Mandy Moore from Kingdom Hearts and then later Mena Suvari in Kingdom Hearts II and the movie Advent Children. Andrea Bowen did her voice in Crisis Core, Final Fantasy Explorers and Dissidia 012. Barret’s original voice actor was Beau Billingslea who did his voice for Advent Children and the spinoff game featuring Vincent called Dirge of Cerberus.

Anyway, what is your thoughts on the changes? Final Fantasy VII Remake is set to be released on March 3, 2020.

  1. I know a lot of people are going, “So glad, Steve Burton couldn’t act!” or “He doesn’t fit young Cloud!”, but I don’t think a lot of them realize that if SE is pursuing more Hollywood actors rather than voice actors, we’ll probably end up losing the top tier VAs like Steve Blum (Vincent) and Quinton Flynn (Reno).
Plus, I just think it stinks in general for any longtime VA to be pushed aside in general, like Hayter in Metal Gear Solid or The Powerpuff Girls. In this case, it’s “Oh, hey Burton/Newbern/others, come back for the FFVIIR trailer and to do VA work in games like World of Final Fantasy and Dissidia NT, but we’re totally hiring someone else in between for the game they’re actually from.”

    • Yeah it’s business for these companies. Can’t always appeal to everyone. I thought Steve Burton was good as Cloud. I wonder if they are going update everyone in the game like replace Blum or Flynn. So far, I haven’t heard any complaints yet.

  2. I thought he was a good Cloud — a lot of the dislike seems to come from the inconsistent voice direction rather than his skills. But I think Blum as Vincent was my favorite with Rick Gomez (Zack) as a close second. Both just fit their parts so well.
It’s nice that Burton is handling being replaced with style and grace though. I’d be bitter voicing a part for 17 years — and even being a part of a new announcement — and then being kicked to the curb.

    • Yeah I really like his performance of Cloud. I really like Blum and Gomez as much as you do. I wasn’t too nitpicky on the voices. Yeah Burton didn’t look like he was hurt from the announcement. He really wants people focus on the characters and story than the voice actors. He is a cool guy.
