Netflix review – A One Year Reflection

Image result for netflix

If you remembered my old post about me getting Netflix, it’s been about a whole year since I became a subscriber to Netflix. I actually signed up on April 2018, but you get the picture. I wasn’t sure if I should do a review on Netflix or a reflection post, so I decided to combine both into one. There won’t be spoilers obviously. I will tell you what movies and shows that I enjoyed. I will also talk about the pros and cons of using Netflix.

Netflix: Before the Streaming Era

Before Netflix became on of the popular streaming service, we had Blockbuster. As a kid, I would go to Blockbuster for renting games like Nintendo 64 games. It was a simple time and I used to remember seeing Blockbuster had these special stations for people who took pictures in the game Pokemon Snap; I never did it so I missed out. As time passes, we later got rental services such Gamefly and then old fashion Netflix. Back then, Netflix was a rental service where you ordered the movies, get them by the mail and keep them as long as you want. Fast forward in time, Netflix decides to expand their service where you can pay to rend a movie and watch on your computer. You get the idea. Later on, Netflix would later allow subscribers to watch movies on laptops, smart TVs and mobile devices. Companies like Hulu would later join in the subscription service world. To make sure Netflix has the upper hand, they included exclusive shows and movies such as Marvel Netflix shows like Daredevil and 13 Reasons Why. Everyone has their own opinion about Netflix and I am happy to share my thoughts.

Easy and selective viewing

So what kind of shows did I watch from Netflix? For starters, I did get into some really good anime. Thanks to Netflix, I was able to watch shows like Devilman: Crybaby, Violet Evergarden and Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online all in English Dub. Devilman: Crybaby was an anime I thought I would ever enjoy. I was recommended to watch this from someone on Twitter and I was surprised that the anime only had ten episodes. Devilman: Crybaby was one epic ride for ten episodes and it really made me see who was the demon, humans or a devil with a human heart. Devilman: Crybaby in the end made me a crybaby. I also wrote a review on this anime. Violet Evergarden would be the next anime to make me cry. After I heard one of my favorite voice actress was going to be in this anime, I jumped it. Erika Harlacher voices the main character Violet and the anime talks about a young girl raised to fight like a soldier learned how to feel with emotions through writing letters. I wrote both a review and I used this anime as topic for an OWLS post. This anime gave me the ugliest cries and I haven’t cried this much since I seen Clannad. It’s not an Netflix exclusive, but I wanted to watch it in English Dub. The next anime I got into was Sword Art Online Alternative. SAOA was a spinoff anime that took place within the Sword Art Online main story but focused on a different story and new characters. The story would take place in the online shooting MMO game Gun Gale Online where the cute and tiny player Llenn would compete against gun crazy opponents. This anime was pretty good regardless if it didn’t have characters like Kirito and Sinon. This was another anime I wrote a review and used for the OWLS.

Besides anime, I did get into some live action movies and TV shows. I saw the live action movie of the American Death Note movie. I reviewed this movie and I can say that I like the idea it wanted to do, but I feel like it went one step forward and two steps back. This movie really over did it with the blood and gore fatalities; it felt like I was watching a Final Destination movie.

I also took some time to watch some superhero shows. There is a funny story about this because it’s one of the reasons why I wanted to get Netflix. My sister and her husband used Netflix to watch all the episodes of the Flash.. I really like the Flash, so after I got Netflix I ended up watching all the way up to season 1. I then also found another show I got into from the DC universe called The Arrow. The Arrow talk about a rich billionaire named Oliver Queen who uses his skills in survival to rid the corruption of Starling City. This show is what led to other shows to being born like The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow in which this would be called the Arrowverse. Also looking for some vigilante action, I got into watching Daredevil. I remember watching Daredevil the movie years ago with Ben Affleck, but after hearing positive reviews of the TV show, I decided to pay a visit. Daredevil without a doubt, is way better than the 2003 movie. For season 1, this show was dark and violent, but it really shows how Netflix did their best to capture the dark essence of the comics.

Netflix Gripes!

I blame myself for getting high hopes. As someone who first got Netflix, I thought I was given the keys to every show and movies I could possibly imagine like watching all the Marvel movies from Disney and Fox, DC movies like the Christopher Nolan Batman movies or even classic TV shows from Nick, Unfortunately, I was dead wrong. I later found that Netflix doesn’t do that and they can only add certain titles to their list. If you wanted to watch TV shows, I would need Hulu. I also learned that Disney was going to be doing their streaming service as well in which they will also stream Disney movies including Star Wars and Marvel movies. This also means that Disney is going to be removing titles from Netflix once the service begins. One thing that really bugged me is that the infamous news that Netflix cancelled the Marvel TV shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones. I been hearing Daredevil is a successful Marvel TV show and I third season really nailed it. Unfortunately, Netflix had to unplug the show and stop producing the episodes. I don’t know how it works with Netflix and the way they handle the shows, but I can’t help but get annoyed when they have to either stop a show and discontinue it or they pick a TV show and remove it from their subscription. I heard people got angry when Netflix mentioned they either wanted to get rid of Friends or The Office.

Conclusion

Even though I do appreciate the many variety of shows I am given, I do see the trade off from Netflix. I can enjoy my shows without commercials and pick out which catches my eyes. I really like the feeling watching episodes without getting interrupted and I like trying out new titles with ease. The thing that irks me is that Netflix system when handling shows is pretty complicated. I don’t know how they do it, but it just bothers me that they will sometimes cancel a series or they take risks and remove a popular TV show. Either way, I don’t really hate Netflix. I like it, but it’s something I can live without in the same time. I might stick around so I can watch those Nick movies like Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader Zim and hopefully see the Netflix version of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Enjoy streaming!

Friday Funny 207: Say the magic words

Shazam!

TGIF!

Thank God it’s Friday! I hope everyone is having a lovely day today. Today is the first Friday of April and this is a whole new month. We are in spring and I hope you guy’s allergies aren’t acting up on you. Before I begin, I want to share with you some exciting news. This month marks the fifth anniversary of creating Matt-in-the-Hat. I been writing for five years and I am attempting to write for my sixth year. Thank you everyone who has helped me push this far.

In other news, this weekend is the movie release of DC’s superhero movie Shazam! Shazam! is the first DC movie of 2019 and it is going to be the premiering in the same month as Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame movie. In Shazam!, watch as the young boy Billy Batson obtains magical powers from a wizard and the only way to access these powers is by saying the words “shazam”. Billy becomes an adult and he becomes the superhero Shazam. In older comics, he goes by Captain Marvel, but due to conflicts of the name and the comics from Marvel, DC changed it to Shazam. If you think this movie is too light-hearted and silly and you want something dark, get ready for October for DC film Joker. DC released a trailer featuring the actor Joaquin Phoenix and his role as Joker in 1980’s version of Gotham City. Joker will be distant from DCEU (DC Extended Universe) movies. Joker is set to be on theaters this October.

With this said, let’s take flight on these Friday memes!

Here are some trailers to hype you this weekend!

DC comics TV show “Arrow” concludes in season 8

Image result for Arrow

What started in 2012 and started shows like the Flash and Supergirl, the TV show Arrow will be ending the series. Actor of Arrow/Oliver Queen, Stephan Amell commented that the series will be ending in season 8 with 10 episodes in this fall season.

Here is a statement written by executive producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Beth Schwartz:

“This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind.  We’re heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come.  We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years.”

Whether you like Arrow or not, it was thanks to Arrow that we got DC shows connected such as Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and upcoming Batwoman pilot. All these shows are part of the same world which is commonly called Arrowverse. According to IGN, Black Lightning is also part of the DC comics world, but the TV show is not part of the Arrowverse.

Jan/Feb + Early March 2019 Pop Funko haul!

Welcome collector’s! Once again I want to share with you my Pop Funko collection. As  a collector fanatic, I can’t resist on getting exclusive figures and Pop’s based on my favorite series and genre.

26. Eto (Tokyo Ghoul) from Fall Convention Exclusive 2018

I don’t usually say no exclusive figures and it’s good thing Hot Topic gave shoppers a discount coupon. This was something I been meaning to get since it was exclusive and I did like watching Tokyo Ghoul. I plan to read more of the manga and then watch the anime up to Tokyo Ghoul:re. I don’t know much about this character except that I seen her in Tokyo Ghoul Square Root A (Tokyo Ghoul √2 or season 2). She is a mysterious character who is part of a organization called Aogiri Tree where Kaneki joins them after getting kidnapped by Jason. I do like her design and have her identity concealed.

27. Riku (Kingdom Hearts III)

We waited this long for Kingdom Hearts III. We had spinoffs and Remix collections for the past years and now with KH3 here, fans were eager to get this game. In this new game, the characters have changed and got not only powers but also new fashion and keyblades. Riku’s appearance has been updated since Kingdom Hearts II and he wears clothing strikingly resembling Noctis from Final Fantasy XV. He also has a new keyblade that looks like a car key.  guess the next game will have Riku driving a car as a promotion to becoming a keyblade master.

28. (28a, 28b, 28c). Batman Pocket Pops set

Three is better than one. Unlike the previous figures I collected, these three figures are really small. I got this set from Amazon and with some credit I used, I only spent about $5. I will be honest, I got this because I heard you can also get these figures in the deluxe Blu-Ray edition of the Batman: Animated Series collection. The deluxe edition comes with all the episodes in Blu-Ray DVD including the two movies The Mask of Phantasm and SubZero and it has three small Pocket Pops of Batman, Joker and Harley Quinn. To avoid spending a fortune, I decided to buy the figures separately and I will settle with getting the collection in standard format.

29. Pikachu (Pokemon) Target exclusive

I don’t usually shop at Target because I have problems with their online shopping. Alternatively, I used eBay instead. I like Pikachu as a kid and I still do. A Pop version of Pikachu looks really cute. I am hoping to get the Bulbasaur figure next.

What do you guys think of these figures?

Batman Beyond Animated Movie not true?

Remember the post I wrote about how DC and Warner Bros was going to make a Batman Beyond movie to compete against Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? Well, I got bad news for you. It’s not happening.

Found in IGN, film reporter Umberto Gonzalez who works with The Wrap sent out a tweet that the Batman Beyond animated movie is not in development. In his tweet, he mentions that DC and Warner Bros commented that any rumors about a possible Batman Beyond movie was false.

All hopes for a Batman Beyond movie is dead.

Warner Bros plans out DC movies

Step aside Marvel, DC is planning to release to their planned movies and get ready for people to show up at the movies.

Warner Bros and DC comics has announced some major plans for the future DC movies. First, it’s been announced that the upcoming Batman movie. The Batman, will be playing in theaters on June 25th, 2021. The screenwriter and director of the movie will be Matt Reeves. Also, it looks like we might be getting a new Batman/Bruce Wayne actor because it’s been reported that Ben Affleck will not be returning as the Caped Crusader. Ben Affleck played as Batman in the movies, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League and briefly in Suicide Squad.

Besides Batman, get ready for a reboot movie. Revealed at Variety, former Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is in the works of rebooting the 2016 movie Suicide Squad. The reboot Suicide Suicide Squad will be in theaters in August 6th, 2021.

No full details yet, but we’re also getting a DC Super Pets movie in May 21st, 2021.

Competing against Marvel and Sony’s movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, we might be getting a Batman animated movie, but with a twist: the movie will be about Batman Beyond. According to ComicBook.com, a leak was discovered at the DCEU subreddit and it shows concept art of Terry McGinnis, current Batman of Batman Beyond after Bruce retired being a hero, and sketches of the Batcave. There is no release date yet.

Last but not least, in case you missed it, DC just released a teaser trailer of the upcoming Harley Quinn movie Birds of Prey. Harley Quinn actor Margot Robbie is back to play as this lovely antihero. Besides her, IGN reveals that other characters are joining the action such as Huntress, Black Canary and Black Mask.
