The T.A.P. Tag by Shaddowcat99

Original post that created this T.A.P. post was done by Carnivoruslreviews.

Thank you to Shaddowcat99 for tagging me in this fun and unique tag post. It’s been a while since I got tagged and it also been a while since I did poetry but I am always up for a challenge. In this tag post, I am going to be sharing my three favorite anime and make a tanka poetry for these three.

A Japanese poem consisting of five lines, the first and third of which have five syllables and the other seven, making 31 syllables in all and giving a complete picture of an event or mood.

  1. Headline your post with “The T.A.P. Tag!” and put “tanka” as one of your tags.
  2. Make sure to link back to the original post that started the tag (this post!).
  3. Make sure to mention the person who introduced the tag to you!
  4. Pick 1-3 of your favorite anime.
  5. Write your tanka about the anime you’ve chosen. It’s fine if you decide to do only one or two if the schedule is tight.
  6. Tag at least 3 or more bloggers you know, and get their creative muscles flowing.

PSA – uses stolen posts from OWLS and Rai! Don’t Support them!

This is important news in the anime community that all writers should be informed.

It has come to my attention that someone is stealing posts by copying and pasting them as their own work for an anime website called Revealed on Twitter, a writer named @MrXenodude noticed that one of his own posts was linked to the site AnimeNewsClub. The link revealed that the writer who goes by the name Wiired is stealing posts.

That’s right, this person stealing work from the OWLS (Otaku Warriors for Liberty and Self-Respect). Specifically, the most notable posts that was taken was from fellow member Rai from Rai’s Anime Blog. What I heard from the team, the owner of AnimeNewsClub is also getting PAID from their site in which they are getting monetize from content they took.

The team member Lynlynsays already wrote to the writer and requesting to remove these posts as it shows that this is not how you support the OWLS and it’s considered stealing.

MrXenodude got a response from the writer and the writer mentioned they did not intend to do anything malicious.

Even if the writer stated they didn’t intend to plagiarize, we must not let our guards down. There’s a huge difference between supporting something and stealing. I have a friend who loves the OWLS and she even showed her support by using examples from our works and CITING/SOURCING the authors.

This is a good example of citing people’s work

This is not supporting. This is stealing.

AnimeNewsClub did not cite anyone’s work and they just copied everything and pasted them to get attention. The way the writer posted these posts shows that they did not read them since some of them mention hiatus posts and it doesn’t make sense to post about taking a hiatus and then writing a new post about a different topic.

To leave this in a final note I have some words to say to everyone including to the owner of the site.

To whom it may concern,

I noticed from my team that you have stolen works from my fellow writers from the OWLS without giving them credit. I heavily request you to remove these posts if don’t plan on citing them. We do not tolerate anyone stealing works from others for ones benefits. Stealing work is a serious matter and we don’t appreciate having our stuff taken. We as writers work very hard to provide content for our readers and it pains us to see it plagiarize by someone who won’t write their own site.

Sincerely, Matthew

To the readers and supporters of OWLS,

Thank you taking the time to read this PSA post. I wanted to warn you guys that we take pride on our works and we don’t appreciate it when someone steals. If you would like to support the OWLS for your blog, PLEASE cite our works. It makes us happy to see our works and ownership being used properly. As OWLS, we do our best to show importance of respect and we do our best to bring fans together who enjoy anime. We don’t like causing division among each others.

Please spread the word and inform others to stop plagiarisim.

Sincerely, Matthew.

I got Ko-fi!

After doing some research and finding this out from my blogger friend TwoHappyCats, I decided to try out Ko-Fi. From I understand from the website and from TwoHappyCats, Ko-Fi is a special website where people can set up a free page for YouTube, WordPress or any other activity you do show work and get paid. Almost and not like Patreon, people can support these people with a measly donation and you don’t have to worry about donating monthly like Patreon. This is called “Buy Me a Coffee” and by clicking on the button or link, you will be taken to a page where you can donate and show your support. The set up is free and you don’t need to pay. If you have Paypal, you can use your email and password from you account and use it for Ko-fi and you can donations to your Paypal. I haven’t explore much but I think you can also donate with other means.

My Page

Why did I create a Ko-fi page?

In the past, I said I wanted to get paid for my writing here in my blog. Eventually, I want to upgrade my blog and make it a personal website. For now, I am going to use Ko-fi as a stepping stone as way to experience what is like to earn money from writing. I feel like doing more for my blog and I want experience something new. Nothing is going to change here drastically so don’t worry. I am still going to blog about anime, video games, news, TGIF and the usual even if you don’t donate. Ko-fi will allow me to see who is supporting my blog and is willing to give me a cup of coffee. If you wish to donate, I will be happy to give you a shout out, or if you don’t want to be placed on the spotlight, your secret is safe.

I am also going to try and update my Ko-fi page to make it look appealing. If you saw it now, it looks bland but like any other coffee shop, I am going to add some cream and love.

Thank you for taking the time to read this news. Rather you buy me a coffee or not, I appreciate you reading my post. As always, I am still going to give you guys the best in my posts even if you don’t click the link. I love you guys!

Also thank you TwoHappyCats for giving me the idea from your blog and others who encouraged me try it out. Give her some coffee!

2017 Goals: Matt-in-the-Hat in the future

Hey everyone, this is Matthew of Matt-in-the-Hat. I don’t think I needed to introduce myself but I still did it to have a proper introduction. 2016… this has been a crazy year. We had events happened all over the world and even us. Most of these events were either good and some were bad. If I was to write a list of good and bad things of 2016, there would be more than two parts of this post. I won’t go into details but I guess you could say that we some interesting moments, some were major and others were minor. As we say goodbye  to 2016, we will go through many changes for 2017. Some maybe good, while others get the other end of the stick. For me, my life has been a roller coaster.

I recently graduated from my University and ended with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Writing, I had two jobs working from full and part time for the season, I saw some amazing movies from Marvel and DC, my sister got proposed and will be getting married in January, and my brother has the skills to play the piano.

As my life gets busy, I have to ask myself, what about my blog? Will it remain the same or will it also evolve? I took some time to think about and I came up some ideas on what to do. I actually have ideas I want to try out for my blog. I want to go far in my blog and try to do new things. I wanted to do a top 5 or 10 post but I decided that this will be just a top posts without limitations.

Reviews – Spoiler Alerts!

If you have been reading my blog, you will notice how I review anime. Whenever I review anime or manga, I always mention that I will not spoil the story/plot. I avoid spoiling a series so I don’t have to take away the pleasure of watching or reading a series. The only exception is if I am reviewing something that’s a season 2 or some other form of sequel.

My plans for 2017 is start review anime/manga with spoilers. I think spoiler reviews will make discussions much easier to talk about and it will be easy for people to let people know which posts are spoilers and which ones are not. I believe this will also make reviewing a series easy to do because I won’t have to hold back on information. Also pn the plus side, I will have an excuse to reread or watch a series again multiple times.

This idea first came up after I had an interview with Anime Girls NYC. She interviewed me and wanted to share everything about me to everyone else. When I first got interviewed, I was really surprised. I never thought anyone would be interested in knowing me. I am just a average blogger who loves anime, manga and video games. The fact someone was interested in me made me feel special. With this moment, I always felt like getting to know know other bloggers out there. I enjoyed watching livestreams from Lita and I like learning about Shay of Anime Reviewer Girl. It could be written or talked but I think it would be nice to get to know people better if I had a moment of time to have a one and one discussion.

First Impressions

This is another idea I want to do in regards to doing anime or manga reviews. I want to try and do it fast reviews on series and give my opinion. If it’s good, I will say “continue on”, if it’s not, I will think of something depending on how the beginning is. For all we know, a series with a bad start could end with a great ending or a series with a great beginning can have a terrible ending. Overall, I want to do Episode 1, chapter 1, volume 1 or 1-hour impressions.

Reviewing REALLY long series

The anime series I ever reviewed that was longer than 24-26 episodes was Rurouni Kenshin. Rurouni Kenshin anime had a total of 95 episodes. Besides that anime, I think we familiar with the Big 3, One Piece, Naruto and Bleach (this is the Big 3 I know). I want to talk about long-going anime series like One Piece or whatever you think it too long and still going . Almost like my First Impression idea, I was thinking of watching the first season of anime and then give my opinion on it. Anime like Fullmetal Alchemist and Bleach that has an ending will be treated like Rurouni Kenshin: watch from beginning to end.

Anime Haul!

I recently shared this on Twitter but I recently bought the Kill la Kill Omakase Box on the Christmas sale at Rightstuf. When I got this treasure chest filled with goodies, I was excited. I held it like a greedy pirate and hid it from everyone. This box contain the Kill la Kill goods for any fan that wanted to hold one. Well, you get the picture. I want to review anime box merchandise like Omakase and Loot Crates.

To make my reviews more interesting, I was thinking about recommending other titles. If an anime/manga series is good, I would recommend other titles to help people continue to enjoy the taste of a good series and help save them from feeling empty of not having anything to see. If a series is bad, I would recommend a title that you are better off seeing; this can help save some time.

YouTube – For game reviews

Many of you may not know this, but I have a YouTube channel and I use to record gameplay videos from PS4. I don’t think I am planning to do anime reviews on YouTube or any other topic or discussions. I do have in mind of showing off the gameplay of a video game to support my video game reviews. It won’t be good as watching other gamers but it’s something and you don’t need to worry about side conversations. You just watch.

Making Money!

Just like other bloggers, I want to be able to make money on my blog. I enjoy writing and I think it will be nice to see my work being paid off. This would mean, you will have to remove any ad block plug-ins to help me out. I may also try to sign up for anime affiliate programs such as Rightstuf or Otaku Mode.

So far these are my goals for 2017. I want to make Matt-in-the-Hat a super, awesome blog. I may not be able to complete them all but I want to make it even better. Thank you for reading and let’s see where 2017 leads us!

Nominated for another Sunshine Blogger Award!

I got another award!!!

I want to thank Scott of Mechanical Anime Reviews for nominating me for this Sunshine Blogger Award. Thank you for choosing me and I am sorry for the delay. Things have been busy for me here.

-Thank the person who nominated you in the blog post and link back to their blog.
-Answer the 11 questions sent by the person who nominated you.
-Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions
-List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog

Scott’s questions:

1) How do you watch your anime (computer/cell phone app/PS4/what?)

I watch anime on my laptop computer. Sometimes I watch anime on my Samsung phone from the Crunchyroll and Adult Swim app.

2) If you were a magical person, describe your transformation sequence

Magical Person? This may be crazy but I would want something flashy and explosive. Something like from the video game Viewtiful Joe’s transformation. Henshin-A-Go-Go-Baby!

3) What do you watch or read that isn’t anime?

If it’s not anime. I usually watch cartoons like SpongeBob or even classic  90’s Nick cartoons in the Splat like CatDog, Rugrats and Hey Arnold! I also watch Full House. I also read my Bible every morning.

4) If you read manga, do you read it digitally or in book form?

I actually read both. I like using both. I like print because I like the feel of a book and digital books are faster and cheaper than print.

5) What time of day is prime time anime watching time for you?

I usually watch anime at night, about 9 PM. This is also the same time I watch Toonami on Saturday nights.

6) Microsoft or Macintosh (Apple) ?

7) Thoughts on Yuri on Ice?

Based on the fandom, Yuri on Ice is an anime filled with fanservice for anime girls and it’s praised for the art, content, and characters. I never watched the anime but I hear it’s worth checking out.

8) If you could play a musical instrument, what would you play and why?

I would most likely play the bongos. I have habit on tapping stuff and I think bongos would fit me. I find it really hard to play guitar or piano.

9) If you had to jump into a seat of a giant robot, what would it be?

If it was possible, I would like to hang and ride with Optimus Prime from Transformers.

10) What is your favorite time of year?

I would definitely say Christmas. This is the time where I get to spend a lot of time with family and we remember the birth of Christ. For my anime personality, this is where I can buy a lot of anime for the sales!

11) Why did you start blogging in the first place?

Much said in my earlier posts, but I will say again. I got into blogging because of a college class requirement. I first used this blog to post news in regards to the United States. TGIF Friday Funny Origins – Story Time

TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday!

This is the catchphrase or slogan to my weekly special “TGIF: Friday Funny” posts. To those who don’t know or already know, every Friday I post these weekly posts called “TGIF: Friday Funny (or Friday Funnies).” In these posts, I usually begin with the usually “TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday!” and then I talk about what’s new. I usually talk about a recap of the previous couple days in regards to anime, manga, or even movies and video games before I start my post. In each posts, I always fill it with silly memes and gifs. These pictures are “clean” in content in which it is safe for even families can look at. These memes can be about anime, movies, non-anime or just pure random stuff. I could post a meme of an anime like DragonBall Z or Sailor Moon or I can share a meme from SpongeBob SquarePants and Spider-Man. I do my best to provide the best entertainment to help people start these Fridays great depending on which timezone you are reading this; in which case, to start with the best Friday afternoon or evening. In most of my posts, I end it with a funny YouTube video or just music.

Today, I will be talking and telling everyone my origin story on how did I come up with Friday Funny and what was the beginning like. I mentioned in the past I wanted to do a special post like this and I think you know who you are. I also told bits about my story and I think some of you may of heard but today, I will tell everyone about humble beginnings.

So without further ado, let’s begin this origin story.

Part 1 – The Original TGIF Messenger

naruto and jiriya frog tumblr_lb76pyu8a51qb6jd9o1_500

Long time ago, way before blogging was a thing, I was barely learning how to use cell phone in middle school. It was no smart phone, the only purpose it did was call or sent messages. Back then, Myspace was the most social media. Anyway, every Friday my dad would send picture messages saying “TGIF” with a cartoon character; it was usually something silly like SpongeBob SquarePants or just cute animal pictures with a ringtone. My mom would actually find a picture online in the computer and save them on a SD card and put it her phone and send them to my dad for Fridays. They were mostly cartoons from Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network or even Disney. C Every Friday we get these messages, it puts a smile on our faces to see something silly to start Fridays. I enjoyed them as they remind that we just need to get through this day and enjoy the weekends. My parents were the original TGIF people.

However, since my dad would be too busy with work to send some messages, he would do it once in every Friday.

Part 2 – Taking over the Title

One Piece Romance_Dawn_Arc

After a while, my dad was still doing the TGIF messages every Friday morning to help start the day. I don’t remember exactly when or how, but it was that point in my life that I wanted to my own version of TGIF. Finding pictures and putting them on cell phones was not always easy. We had Windows XP and we had to rely on SD cards. Once I learned how to add pictures on my phone, I would find images online and send them out on Friday mornings. Once my dad realized what I was doing, we competed with each other on who had the better picture messages. It was fun to see each others’ messages and see which one gave us a big smile. Unfortunately, this didn’t last.

I wasn’t sure if my dad was too busy or he just lost interest but he stopped sending messages. I was the only one that did these TGIF messages every Friday. He then decided that he liked what I was doing and he decided to retire. He gave me the job to send these messages on Fridays. Up until this day, from middle school, high school and even college, I always send a text message with the words “TGIF.”

Part 3 – Welcome to the Blogging World of WordPress

Bleach Ichigo_In_His_Inner_World

Most of you already knows this by now but I started blogging way back in my early years in college. I took an English class that we had to make an account and blog in order be graded. I had to sign up to WordPress. I didn’t know what’s a blog and what does it look like. After a while, I got the hang of it; I had to just make a title and post some news in the United States. I enjoyed blogging. It was different and I enjoyed posting news. This was before talked or shared my interest with anime or manga.

After completing the class, I decided to leave the blogging world and resume back to my previous “non-social media” life. Life was dull as usual but not all the time. I lived in private life and the communications I had with technology was text messaging or calling. By the end of 2015, I had this interest of keeping a journal or just doing reviews on my favorite hobbies. My hobbies was watching anime, playing video games and reading manga. I felt like I wanted to share them to people. At this time, I was thinking on how will I do it. That’s what hit me, I remembered that I still had my WordPress account and my site was still there. I reopened my site and I got started on creating drafts. I even changed my blog name from “Matthew Castillo – Dilly Dally Shilly Shally” to “Matt-in-the-Hat – No Doubt About That.” This was the turning point of my life.

Part 4 – Rough Starts and Meme Collecting

DRRR tumblr_m39rokeFIf1r877bvo1_500

Like any beginner, my blogging habits wasn’t as great and my writing in this digital realm was quite weak. I hardly visited people’s site and anime reviews were too short and probably biased. It took me a while until it improved. As time passed, I was just an aniblogger who would share the news and review anime. Even though I talked about anime, I wanted to be different. I already knew I wasn’t the only guy who would these anime topics. I saw cosplay posts, anime discussions, blog tips, top posts and reviews. As much as I like anime, I also like video games, comics, movies and even cartoons. As I was wondering what to do in order be an individual, I came across an app for Androids and iPhones called iFunny 🙂.

This app was filled with memes, vines, and even gifs. It would have random jokes and humor from different users and it was used for entertainment. I like this app for the comedy and related and non-related jokes. I did notice, however, it did have some anime memes and gifs but they were not as funny as seeing mainstream memes regarding to things like SpongeBob, Kanye West, Barack Obama, or The Walking Dead or whatever is common. If an anime meme was ever considered popular in the selections, commenters are quick to say “collective leak” or “Weeabos.” As an anime fan, I like memes that uses anime for jokes. I would download them and collect them and look at them again for the future for viewing pleasures.

Even after getting some good memes, the only ones that enjoyed anime memes was myself. Then I had an idea, I told myself “what if I use all the collected memes and post it for everyone can see?”

With that idea in my mind, I uploaded the memes and wrote out a post for Friday and I entitled it “TGIF: Friday Funny.”

Part 5 – Friday Funny – A Bumpy Start

oreimo kirino efore_anyone_asks_it_s_not__b1247aa7961ad875f98349dfa1face00

When I first started these Friday Funny posts, I didn’t get many views. As a beginner aniblogger, nobody really knew me or had any interest on me. However, I didn’t let that bother me. I continued these posts every Friday until someone notices them; I even did Monday posts with memes and called it Random Mondays. Random Mondays was going to be like “TGIF: Friday Funny” but only Mondays. They were going to help make Mondays feel great and put people in a better mood but I scrapped that idea because that would be too hard to do for Fridays and Mondays.

Later on as I made more episodes, I even did “themed posts”. I would write silly and creative titles for each episodes and posts the majority of memes for that episode. For example, “Episode 25: Happy Birthday Naruto! Never Had a friend like you!” was a special Friday episode consisting of Naruto memes and promoting the Diamond Edition release of Disney’s Aladdin. On “Episode 35: May the Force be with you!”, I used mainly Star Wars memes to help bring hype for Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie on December 2015.

However, whenever it wasn’t themed or was, I even used random pictures from anime or even causal memes that anyone can enjoy; otaku, gamers or even casual viewers can still have good time with these memes. I also try to use clean jokes; I won’t post any racist, sexist, dark humor or any other explicit memes (No rude, crude, or nudes!).

TGIF: Friday Funny is a weekly blog post that every Friday and is filled with clean content for otakus, gamers or the causual.

Part 6 – Future

It’s funny how far I went from just sending messages from a cell phone to all the way here and blogging about memes on Fridays. With all these memes and posts, I could go even up to above episode 100. My goals for the future is to continue to posts more memes on Fridays and hopefully bring a simile to those who wants one. If I can make one person smile or laugh, then I am doing a good job. You or anyone else doesn’t have to be anime fan to enjoy these posts and you don’t need to worry about offensive content. These posts were made for the public and I enjoy bringing joy and laughter to my peers. If life gets you down, come to my site and watch some episodes and just smile 🙂

Thanks for reading my origin posts. Like I said, every Friday is my TGIF: Friday Funny posts. I try post them about 6am PTS. This Matthew and I hope you have blessed day. 🙂

  • “Episode 5: Memorial Day Weekend Special” was my first TGIF holiday post.
  • There are 37 episodes for season 1 of TGIF: Friday Funny
  • “Episode 18: The “S” word” was inspired from talking to one of my blogging friends ignite18. She did a post titled “The S word” at her site and she had to get ready for going back to school.
  • “Episode 30: Anime is for Children” was inspired by aniblogger Arria Cross and her post “How to P*** Off Anime & Manga Fans“. I got inspired by her first point titled “Anime & Manga Are For Kids Only”.
  • On “Episode 23: Sandwich-kun or Titans?”, I promoted my blogging and YouTuber friend Anime Review Girl. At this time, she was starting to do YouTube videos. I helped bring attention to her channel.
  • Episodes 16, 35, and 66 are written differently when you click on them. For example: Episode 66 is called “Episode (Order) 66” which is a reference to Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith. Episode 35 is written as “Episode XXXV” as way to promote Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Episode 16 is titled “Sweet Friday Funny” as a joke for “Sweet 16.”
  • Season 1 episodes appear to missing memes and gifs because I transported them to Google Photos. I need more space for media library..
