9/9/99 – September 9th, 1999: The birth of the Sega Dreamcast (NA)
The Sega Dreamcast was Sega’s most powerful and last home console. The Sega Dreamcast may have had a short life span, but it brought in many amazing games that fans hold dear to their heart. We had games like Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Dead or Alive 2, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Soul Calibur and Power Stone. Even though some of these games later got ported to consoles to other consoles, it was thanks to the Dreamcast that gave us epic game memories.
I never owned a Dreamcast, but I always wanted one. My late uncle got one and he would let me play with it even though I wasn’t good at gaming at that time. The games he let me play was Sonic Adventure 1 and Sonic Adventure 2. In Sonic Adventure 1, I remember playing as Sonic and running through Emerald Coast trying to get away from the killer whales. Sonic Adventure 2 was the one game that made a lasting impression on me. I remember playing as Sonic in City Escape and the first hearing Crush 40’s song “Escape from the City”. I remember seeing Shadow the Hedgehog and I thought he was the coolest character in that game. I never beat SA2, because the Dreamcast was a bit damaged due to my uncle always bringing it whenever he played with his friends (that explains why the audio didn’t play in cutscenes). Eventually, when I got a bit older, I got a GameCube and I got Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and I completed both games. Fast forward in couple years when my sister and brother-in-law was still dating dating, my brother-in-law had a Dreamcast and we played a quick match of Marvel vs Capcom 2. I always pick Marvel characters and I always picked Venom in my team. I didn’t care if I lost many times, I just enjoyed this console.
I may not have owned this console, but I lived the dream of experiencing Sega’s incredible, fun console.
Did you owned a Dreamcast? What games did you played?

Get ready PS4 owners, Sega is releasing a new video game and it’s currently exclusive for PS4 users. Highly popular in Japan, Sega announced that there is a new Sakura Wars game. Currently, the game doesn’t have an official name and it’s going by the name PROJECT Sakura Wars. While I do not know this series, there is one piece of news I found quite enticing. It’s been revealed that Bleach creator Tite Kubo is involved in this game and he helped design the main characters.
According to Sega, the game will have a “battle” and “action” game system and players can form bonds with characters. The game is set to be released in spring 2020 for PS4.
Sonic fans are going to have to wait for this new racing game. The upcoming racing game Team Sonic Heroes release date will be out for purchase on May 21st, 2019 according to the Sonic the Hedgehog twitter page. It was originally going to be released this year for the Christmas season, but according to the tweet, the team behind the game wants to patch up any bugs and they want players to experience and fun Sonic racing game. This game will be released on PS4, X1 and Switch and the iconic rock band Crush 40 will return to play the game’s main song. Crush 40 is well known for doing the theme songs in past Sonic games like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Heroes.
A new Sonic game and a Pokemon Switch? This sounds like something you would hear from Chris-Chan and his webcomic of Sonichu. Zap to the Extreme lol.
Yesterday, Nintendo recently revealed a new Pokemon game and it is available on Nintendo Switch. Revealed in a trailer, this new game will play like the traditional Pokemon games on the handheld systems with a combination of catching Pokemon like Pokemon Go. Just like the games, there will be two versions of the game in which will allow players to start with either a Pikachu or Eevee. The games is called Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! In this new game, players will be able to walk with their Pokemon and battle wild Pokemon and trainers; pretty much do the same you would do in the previous games. As a twist, in order to catch Pokemon, players will have to attempt and try to catch Pokemon just like the phone game Pokemon Go! Players will be able to carry their caught Pokemon in a Pokeball controller in real life to bond and even transfer Pokemon from the phone to console. This Switch game will come out in November 16th, 2018 just in time for the upcoming holidays.
Originally as a teaser, Sega has finally revealed the mysterious Sonic the Hedgehog racing game. Revealed in Twitter, this new game is called Team Sonic Racing. Thanks to the blog site SCORPZGCA, it was actually leaked by Walmart. According to the game’s description, players will be able to play as Sonic and his friends and customize their vehicles and also use the power of the Wisps. The game will be available to play on PS4. X1, Switch and Steam and it will come out this upcoming winter.
Hello gamers, I come with good news!
Originally released only for Nintendo Switch, Konami will be releasing exclusive video game releases to Super Bomberman R for PS4, X1 and PC users. These new games will be called Shiny Editions and depending on what platform you buy them, players will get an exclusive characters. PS4 owners will get Ratchet from Ratchet and Clank, Master Chief for X1, and P-Body from Portal. The games will come out on June 12th.
Released in 2017 and announced today from SXSW, Sega’s popular and successful game Sonic Mania will be getting a physical release. Previously, the game was only a digital game, but players will be able to buy the game as a disc. As an added bonus, the game will have an reverseable cover that resembles the Sega Genesis, 4P competitive mode and the return of the 1993 characters Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. I believe that if you already have the game, they will be in this game as an update. This physical game will come out in the summer 2018.
Mighty and Ray originally first appeared in 1993 in the arcade game SegaSonic the Hedgehog. This game is only in Japan and players, up to three, could either be Sonic, Mighty and Ray and control them with a ball-like controller. Mighty later returned in the spinoff game Knuckles Chaotix for the Sega 32x.
Found on Twitter but I found out in Anime News Network, Sonic the Hedgehog game programmer and former leader of Sonic Team Yuji Naka revealed the news that he decided to join the game company Square Enix. He even mentions that he will still be working in video games.
So what does this mean? I believe Sonic will still be in Sega unless something happens but that means the same guy who worked on Sonic games will be lending a hand in Square Enix team and be involved projects such as Final Fantasy or other well known titles.
Here are some interesting facts:
- Yuji Nake joined Sega in 1984 but starting developing Sonic the Hedgehog in 1990.
- He left Sega and formed his own team named Prope in 2006. (This is probably the same time where Sega split up into teams and made games like Sonic 06 and Wii game Sonic and the Secret Rings.)
- He was the producer to the OVA anime Sonic the Hedgehog in 1996 and executive producer to 2003 Sonic X anime.
- In Prope, he made games like Rodea the Sky Soldier, Fishing Resort and Ivy the Kiwi?

After 24 years of publication, the American comic publishers Archie Comics will be ending Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic books. The partnership of Archie Comics and Sega will be ending and no more Sonic comics will continue. Unfortunately as well, this cancellation news happened and the comics has not even reached issue #300. This means also that fans will no longer get these titles:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic Universe
- Sonic Mega Drive
Here is what Sega said in tweet:
However, despite of this and possible silver lining in the negatives, comic publisher IDW will be forming a partnership with Sega and will continue to produce the Sonic comics. IDW is known for publishing titles such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, My Little Pony and Transformers. It’s unknown if they will continue with the available characters (Sally, Snively, or other original characters) or start out fresh.
Like Sega games? Do you like free games? Stuck on your phone all the time? I got news for you!
Sega recently announced and started “SEGA Forever”. Based on this news, SEGA will be releasing game ports of Sega video games for free on Android and Apple phones. Games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beasts, Phantasy Star II and much more now free. Here is the catch though, the games will have ads in it but if you pay for the ads, you can get rid of them and it costs $1.99. The games can also be played with a controller via Bluetooth.
To those who didn’t know, June 23rd was the 25th anniversary to Sega’s mascot Sonic the Hedgehog. Besides him teasing Dr. Eggman (or Dr. Robotnik) on Twitter or insulting the new game Mighty No. 9, Sonic is still alive and running.
Announced by Sega’s producer Takashi Iizuka during the end of Sonic’s “25th Anniversary Party” in Tokyo, Iizuka stated that a new Sonic Project will be launched in 2017. Sega mentioned that more details will be announced in July 22 at San Diego in a livestream at Twitch.
What do you think the project is? A new Sonic game? A cartoon? Movie?
Speaking of Sonic, it’s also been confirmed in February by Sega Sammy Holdings and CEO Hajime Satomi that there is a plan of making a live-action/ animation hybrid movie of Sonic the Hedgehog. It will be helped by Sony Pictures Entertainment and the movie is planned for release in 2018.
